An Introduction to the Birds of Tropical America

    Shorebirds - Plovers and Lapwings

Plovers are small shorebirds seen on most beaches. Lapwings are much larger birds usually not on the beach. Only two species of lapwing are found in the Americas.

Semipalmated Plover
Semipalmated Plover (Charadrius semipalmatus)
Curry Hammock State Park, Florida, USA
The most common migratory plover.

Grey Plover
Grey Plover (Pluvialis squatarola)
Curry Hammock State Park, Florida, USA
Many species of plovers and other migratory birds undergo color changes between breeding season and the rest of the year. This Black-bellied Plover (Grey Plover) is heading south and will loose the black belly. In the spring the hormones will start flowing, the black belly will return, and the bird will fly back to the tundra.

Southern Lapwing
Southern Lapwing (Vanellus chilensis)
Montevideo, Uruguay
The national bird of Uruguay is common in open fields.
